The people behind Animals On Stamps
Matthew Daw
Matt is the stamp expert and biology guru behind Animals On Stamps. He has been collecting stamps since childhood. His focus on the animal theme stems from his B.Sc in Biology and his fascination with all the living things that we share our planet with. Matt is a full-time traveller, and blogs at Reason2Roam.
Heather Wicksted
Heather is the database administrator and website developer behind Animals On Stamps. She is also a travel blogger at Reason2Roam. The process of understanding the nuances behind stamp checklists, biological identification and stamp catalogue listings has been good learning for her and she has really enjoyed it!
The Process
The sheer number of stamps that have living things on them is huge.
Matt always dreamed of a way to take these thousands and thousands of stamp listings and put them in one place so he and others could plan, organize and inventory their collections.
The goal was to collate all the available data into one user friendly, dynamic and online source. This would allow individual collectors to produce a list that would support any aspect of collecting ‘animals’ on stamps. This was a “Someday We Could Do This” Idea
The spring and summer of 2020 became the ideal time to develop the idea as Covid prevented the team’s usual travel plans.
Research was completed on the tools and resources needed to display and manage the data and to run the website. It was clear that a tool more sophisticated than a spreadsheet was needed.
At the same time, the team began researching stamp listings to enhance the lists they already had. Many hours were spent pouring over Scott Catelogues and other resources.
The structure of the database and website began to take shape.
The development of the end product took into account the fact that philatelists have an infinite variety of collecting interests and ‘conditions’ for their collections. All the different ways a person might want to organize and collect stamps was considered.
The team is proud of the final product, and hopes you enjoy searching, filtering and customizing the perfect list to meet your personal collecting needs.
